Journal part 2

Date of the Article: April 09, 2024 Date of the Blog: April 09, 2024 News source: Washington News The article about the Brian Dorsey execution seems straightforward, serious and a little bit of a neutral tone. It is also structured and framed in a way where it can possibly be interpreted as trying to bias readers' perception. I would also say there is some emotional language in the article. An example to support my analysis for the emotional language would be, “ Dorsey turned himself in to the police three days after the killings and confessed to the murders. He was then sentenced to death” and “ after which prosecutors accused Dorsey of sexually assaulting his cousin” these sentences try to get a strong emotional response out of the person reading and interpret Dorsey’s guilt. In the article, it includes what Dorsey’s attorney has said, I feel like as a reader myself and for other readers this makes them think as if this execution was wrongly done, to support my thought and analysis, Kirk Henderson, Dorsey's attorney, criticized the state for moving forward with the execution by saying, "If anyone deserves mercy, surely it is Brian, who has been fully rehabilitated and whose death sentence was so flawed that five of his jurors believe he should not be executed," Henderson said in a statement. "Executing Brian Dorsey is a pointless cruelty, an exercise of the state's power that serves no legitimate penological purpose." Reading that statement makes Dorsey look like a better person Furthermore, another example where there is bias, and the writer is on the Dorsey’s side is when the article states, “More than 70 current and former corrections officers had urged Parson to commute Dorsey's sentence, arguing he had been rehabilitated, and his lawyers said that Dorsey was in a drug-induced psychosis when he committed the killings in 2006” this statement is strongly trying to make the readers believe that Dorsey should not been executed, by adding excuses such as he was in drug induced psychosis. This will make the readers think that he had a mental disability and he committed the crime and should not be executed. Also mentioning the 70 current corrections officers makes the readers think in a way there were a lot of people who were against this and did not want this to happen. Lastly, after doing a thorough analysis on this news article, I learned that things like supporting the person of the wrongdoing, will make the reader feel bad for them. This article has great information but I believe that it is written in a way that's slightly biased towards Dorsey by adding information that supports that the execution was a wrong decision. https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2024/04/08/brian-dorsey-execution-missouri/
